The Hatchling

Over the August Bank Holiday weekend, thousands of people watched The Hatchling soar over Plymouth's waterfront in a unique performance which represented a powerful symbol of hope.

This unique theatrical event was a poignant reminder of the power of community, with more than 250 local people from groups across the city joining the cast of the performance.

    On Sunday 29 August, the people of Plymouth were joined by visitors from across the country to watch The Hatchling take flight from the coast and soar across the sea in a powerful symbol of hope.

    In a world first, the giant dragon puppet transformed into a kite, flew into the air and across Plymouth Sound, with an audience of tens of thousands on the Hoe and along the coast watching in awe.

    One of the highlight events of Mayflower 400, The Hatchling has been conceived by Angie Bual, Artistic Director of Trigger, the Bristol-based producers of extraordinary theatrical projects.

    A giant puppet in the form of a dragon will hatch and roam through the city, before taking flight from the coast in a unique feat of artistry and engineering.

  • New date confirmed for The Hatchling in Plymouth

    The outdoor theatre performance The Hatchling has been confirmed to go ahead in Plymouth on 28 and 29 August 2021.

    Initially due to take place over the 14-15 August weekend, the event was postponed as a mark of respect to the community and families involved in the tragic incident in Keyham on 12 August.

    It is hoped the event will bring the city together in a moment of unity and hope.

  • Statement about The Hatchling

    Following the tragic incident in Keyham on Thursday evening, the thoughts of Plymouth City Council and Trigger, producers of The Hatchling, are with the people of Plymouth and all those affected by this awful event.

    As a mark of respect to the community and families involved, it was decided not to go ahead with the planned performance of The Hatchling over the 14-15 August weekend.
