This My Mayflower video goes behind the scenes and previews a ground-breaking classical music interpretation of the Mayflower story.
The Journey of the Mayflower is a retelling of the stories connected to the Mayflower's voyage by Stile Antico - one of the finest vocal ensembles, renowned for their vibrant and expressive interpretations of music from the Renaissance – and this preview features an extract from their music-drama film 'The Journey of the Mayflower'.
The full-length film includes performances of some of the finest vocal music of the time of the Mayflower's departure - the very music the passengers of the ship may have been familiar with.
It explores many of the untold stories of the voyage, including those of the women on board the ship - wives of the Pilgrims and Adventurers, and mothers of the many children who joined the voyage. In hearing the voices of the women, we uncover a deeper and more multi-dimensional narrative than the familiar story of the Pilgrims.
This work is woven around extracts from 'Of Plimoth Plantation', the diary of William Bradford, the Plymouth colony’s first governor, who wrote a detailed account of the Pilgrims' journey from the North of England, via the Low Countries, to New England.
The script, written for the group by dramatist Katharine Armitage, also gives voice to other characters whose words do not survive, seeking to shine a light on other aspects of this important and complex story – including the consequences for the native Wampanoag tribe of the Pilgrims' arrival.
Musical gems by William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons, Thomas Tomkins, and others, bring this extraordinary tale to life with passion and immediacy - remarkably all created during the Covid-19 pandemic.
