Navigating A New World

Two print studios on opposite sides of the Atlantic have been remembering the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower.

Inspired by the historic voyage in 1620, ‘Navigating A New World’ is an international, cross-cultural print exchange project and exhibition of contemporary printmaking at Inky Hands Print Studio and Gallery in Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA.

Cowprint Artists’ Group at Red Hot Press, Southampton, are holding a UK-based exhibition of this exciting print collaboration at God’s House Tower, Arts and Heritage Venue, to commemorate the sailing of the Mayflower from Southampton.

‘Navigating A New World’ will be on display from Friday to Sunday each week from 16 July to 15 August 2021 (exactly 401 years since the Mayflower set sail).

Kay Brown - 'Downwind of Cape Cod'

The free exhibition will showcase the work of 40 printmakers from the two studios, drawing their inspiration from different aspects of the Mayflower’s voyage to America.

A key highlight of the exhibition will be two concertina books of original prints, one of which was produced by Cowprint and one which has been set across the Atlantic as part of an international print exchange from Inky Hands.

The UK exhibition had been planned last year but was postponed due to the pandemic. However, Kat Libretto, of Inky Hands USA, did manage to hold the exhibition of original prints depicting the Mayflower story and its impact in the Inky Hands Studio Gallery last August.

Jenny Goodhand - 'Atlantic Voyagers'

She also exhibited the two concertina books of original prints, and plans to re-run the exhibition this summer when more visitor numbers are permitted.

In the UK, Cowprint Artists' Group has been working with God’s House Tower, run by A Space Arts and Cowprint's sponsor (South Coast Port Services), to bring the exhibition to fruition.

Prints are available for the public to view and purchase at the exhibition, and a limited number are available online here.
