Three Sisters Planting Competition Deadline

Get out in the garden and take part in the Three Sisters Planting Competition, run by the Bassetlaw Museum.

When the Mayflower Pilgrims landed in America, they had next to no idea how to survive in the strange new climate.

One of the things that the native Wampanoag tribe taught them was how to grow American corn, beans, and squash together.

These are known as the three sisters, and make for excellent companion planting as the corn stems support the climbing beans and the leaves of the squash plants shade out any weeds.

The Museum is challenging people to have a go at recreating this ancient method in their own gardens and send in photos to be judged by BBC Radio Lincolnshire’s John Stirland, with a deadline of 11 September.

First prize is £250 of Dukeries Garden Centre vouchers and the opportunity to help John plant the Pilgrim 400 apple tree at Bassetlaw Museum, while second prize is £100 of Dukeries Garden Centre vouchers.
