Thousands in funding for Illuminate Immingham

Oct 14, 2019

Immingham Town Council has been awarded a grant of almost £15,000 through an Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grant to deliver the 2019 Illuminate Immingham event, scheduled to take place on Friday, November 29.

Now in its third year, Illuminate Immingham will launch the town’s year-long commemoration of the sailing of the Mayflower ship with a magnificent lantern parade and, brand new for this year, some exciting digital projections.

The coastal town, in North East Lincolnshire, was the setting for the Separatists' escape to Holland, where they planned the pioneering Mayflower voyage.

The funding enables the development of the artistic quality of the event and to build further engagement within the community. Artist-lead lantern making workshops will take place alongside projection content sessions, working with artist Jason Wilsher-Mills, bringing to life historic people of the time through contemporary art.

The project has been matched with funding from North East Lincolnshire Council and Immingham Town Council and will work with local arts and heritage organisation, Our Big Picture.
Andy Hopkins, town clerk at Immingham Town Council said: “Immingham Town Council is delighted to be awarded this funding by the Arts Council England.

"The Illuminate parade has become an important date in the town’s calendar and is very well attended. This grant will enable us to work with our partners to create an even bigger event for our community and to launch our year of Mayflower 400 celebrations.”

Councillor Callum Procter, Cabinet member for tourism, heritage and culture at North East Lincolnshire Council said: “This is fantastic news for the area. This funding will help Immingham Town Council grow their already successful Illuminate event and bring a new dimension of arts and culture to the town.

“Additionally, next year will be the 400-year anniversary commemorations of the Mayflower ship sailing and as part of a LEADER funded programme, a new exhibition in the museum and a heritage trail will be created to highlight the significant places in and around the town and make it something special for residents.”

Information about Illuminate Immingham community workshops and how you can get involved will be issued in the coming weeks.
