Construction begins on Mayflower replica scale model

Dec 07, 2018

Construction of a meticulously designed 10-foot replica scale model of the Mayflower is well underway with an astonishing level of attention to detail.

The fascinating model is being built to mark the 400th anniversary year of the ship's pioneering voyage to America by a team of local shipwrights, volunteers and students.

They are being led by Captain Ian Kirkwood with help from students at South Devon Marine Academy for the Dartmouth Mayflower 400 team. The replica will be the centrepiece of a flagship exhibition in Dartmouth for the Mayflower 400 commemorations with display boards and descriptive interactive screens.

You can watch a video of the construction below, courtesy of BBC Spotlight:

One side of the model will be open, exposed from stem to stern to display the construction and interior, including the Pilgrims' and crew's accommodation. One section will include model Pilgrim figures, hammocks, storage and stove etc.

The model will be exhibited with display boards and descriptive interactive screens, in either the Visitor Centre or the new Museum extension.

It is being constructed at the Britannia Royal Naval College, with kind support from the college. Sponsorship in the form of materials and equipment has already been generously offered by RGC Building Supplies, Axminster Machinery and Carpenter Oak.
