One Small Candle

Apr 24, 2017

We spoke to David Saunders, host and tour guide from ‘One Small Candle’ based in Plymouth, England to find out more about the new guided tours.

What is One Small Candle?

One Small Candle is a group of Pilgrim ambassadors, hosts and tour guides who welcome tourists, dignitaries and day visitors to the Mayflower Steps in Plymouth.

The authentically dressed group of Pilgrims, aged between 9 and 65, live and tell the story of the Mayflower Pilgrims, the ship and the voyage.

David and his wife Elizabeth returned from 15 years in the US and saw an opportunity to make more of the Mayflower steps situated on the Waterfront in Plymouths historic Barbican. ‘Britain’s Ocean city has so much fascinating history – and the Mayflower voyage of 1620 is a story that really captured our imagination. We wanted to bring it to life for visitors to the area’ said David.

‘Quirky and interesting walking tours are available. The Mayflower 400 walking tour was written by us and we like to keep it very interesting and personable. No one tour is the same as we change it very often. We have had some very pleasant comments about the tour and even have five stars on Trip Advisor!’ David Saunders, One Small Candle

David and the Pilgrim guides show visitors the best of the waterfront area – exploring the cobbled streets of the Barbican and Sutton Harbour.

One Small Candle tours are free of charge, donations are welcome.

Recently One Small Candle won the Plymouth Herald Community award about which founder David Saunders said “Amazing! We all love what we do and to receive an award from the local newspaper was wonderful and very gratifying“

David is also a top level Google Local Guide and makes a point of sharing interesting historical places with Google.

Can local people get involved?
