People across Plymouth will take part in a pioneering mass street dance led by the award-winning Street Factory in a bold and contemporary interpretation of the Mayflower story.
This will incorporate four hip hop theatre pieces, telling real life stories through the cornerstones of hip hop culture - B-boying, graffiti, MC-ing, rapping, poetry, spoken word and DJ-ing. They will be inspired by core the Mayflower’s values - freedom, humanity, imagination and the future.
Participants will be given a chance to explore the ongoing issues they encounter in their day to day lives, in order to deliver authentic, youth driven, educational entertainment. The community have voiced their desire to bring the Mayflower commemorations up to date, making it relevant to them.
The reach of this project is potentially vast - organisations and people across the city have already shown an interest in being partners including schools, colleges, theatre groups, dance schools, disabled artists and companies, artists, community groups and charities. They will all discover the values of Mayflower 400, learn the dance routine and perform.
A four-month outreach and rehearsals programme will take place for groups at Street Factory and in outreach sessions around the city which will be promoted via social media. A film of the dance will be made and played on social media for families and individuals who are unable to attend classes/workshops so that they can learn the routine and join in.
The aim for this piece of hip hop 'theatre' is to enable people to transform their feelings and experiences into original music, lyrics and dramatic material that will bring Street Factory’s positive messages to the eyes and ears of their peers locally, nationally and internationally.
Street Factory CIC works closely with communities in and around Plymouth, specialising in helping young people and community members from different backgrounds with a variety of abilities and needs. The group has been connecting audiences, young people, artists and practitioners for the last ten years.
Fuelled by a deep rooted passion, commitment, determination and philosophy the group creates a springboard that empowers and enables young people to see their potential while understanding the positive impact they can have within their community.
